Roger Federer moved closer to a career Grand Slam on Saturday as he managed to get past Paul-Henri Mathieu at the French Open with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory on the clay courts of Roland Garros to advance to the fourth round.
Federer hammered out 14 aces in the match while collecting 59 winners in the three hour match. The Swiss star controlled the day with an effective first serve that resulted in points 82 percent of the time and he managed to break Mathieu’s serve on five of 16 opportunities.
Federer is sitting on 13 career Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind the record held by Pete Sampras. A win at Roland Garros would also mark a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times. Federer has reached the finals of the French Open the last three years only to fall to Rafael Nadal on each occasion.
