Susan Boyle, the 48-year-old Scottish woman who rocketed to fame following her rendition of the Les Miserable classic I Dreamed a Dream during an audition for Britain’s Got Talent, finished second in the competition on Saturday night. Boyle was upset by a ten-member dance crew Diversity which took the top honors and will now perform before at the Royal Variety Show in December.
Boyle had been the odds-on favorite to win the competition after she left the crowd open-mouthed following her audition. The unassuming church volunteer left many chuckling when she indicated she wanted to be a professional singer yet when she hit her first note the crowd roared with approval and she quickly became an Internet sensation.
Clips of the performance flooded YouTube and Boyle became a superstar, suddenly thrust into the spotlight and becoming more than just a singer but almost a cause. Boyle became a lesson in the dangers of judging a book by its cover as she showed that talent doesn’t always come in a glamorous package.
With her stunning performance Boyle’s name was in headlines on a daily basis and she was seen as a sure thing in the final competition but it wasn’t to be as Diversity was crowned the winner in a stunning upset.
Despite the disappointing loss Boyle claimed “the best people won” and told the dance troupe, “I wish you all the best.”
