A clash between Hamas fighters and Palestinian police in the West Bank has left six people dead and raised the tension between the rival Hamas and Fatah groups.
The fighting broke as Palestinian police, loyal to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas of the Fatah faction, went to arrest Mohammed al-Samman, commander of the Hamas fighters in the northern West Bank. Samman, along with another Hamas militant, refused to surrender and a gun battle erupted. Three police officers were killed in the battle as were the two Hamas fighters and the owner of the home in which the militants were staying.
Fatah and Hamas factions have been at odds for some time now with Fatah in charge of the West Bank and Hamas the Gaza Strip. It was Hamas that ousted Fatah and the Palestinian Authority from control in the Gaza Strip in 2007 and since that time the two have been involved in sporadic fighting.
While the Palestine Liberation Organization, dominated by Fatah, has recognized Israel’s right to exist Hamas has refused to do the same and that divide has kept the Palestinian factions divided, causing further problems for a Middle East peace deal.
