South Ossetia Holding Elections, Independence Still in Question

South Ossetia is holding their first elections since declaring independence from Georgia last August following a five-day war that involved Russian troops.

Georgia has not recognized South Ossetia’s independence and sill claims the breakaway region as its own yet polls opened on Sunday. The elections are seen as an opportunity for Eduard Kokoity and his Unity party to strengthen their grip on the disputed region and with Russia’s support the outcome is likely to be favorable.

There are 34 parliamentary seats at stake in the election with just one Georgian listed a parliamentary candidate.

Opposition to Kokoity have accused the leader of embezzling Russian aid money to the war torn region that still bears the scars of the recent war. Kokoity has denied those charges.
