Air France Flight 447 Missing Over Atlantic

An Air France plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to France has disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean and officials now fear the worst.

It is believed Flight AF 447 was struck by lightning while going through a bad electrical storm prior, lost control in turbulence and went down. About four hours into the flight an automatic message had been sent indicating a short circuit and officials lost communication shortly after.

The plane had left Rio de Janeiro around 10:00 p.m. Sunday and was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew.

Brazilian air force planes were dispatched to search for the missing Air France plane but the search area is extensive and according to Douglas Ferreira Machado, head of investigation and accident prevention for Brazil's Civil Aeronautics Agency, it would take “a long time.”
