Any
hope for finding survivors from the Air France Flight 447 from Brazil to France
has faded as search teams have been left to scan massive amounts of the Atlantic
Ocean with no real understanding of where the plane, carrying 216 passengers
and 12 crew, vanished.
About
four hours into its flight from Rio de Janeiro Air France Flight 447 sent an
automatic message indicating that it had a short circuit. Many officials
believe that may indicate the plane was struck by lightning as it had been
traveling through an electrical storm.
It
is believed that whatever caused the Airbus 330-200 to vanish it happened
quickly because the pilots never had the time to issue a mayday. Officials have
indicated that the flight had experienced heavy turbulence and there have been
reports that the plane had lost cabin pressure prior to losing contact with air
traffic controllers.
French
President Nicolas Sarkozy was at the Charles de Gaulle airport to meet with
those who had been expecting to welcome the flight. Sarkozy acknowledged that
hope of finding any survivors was “very small” and that the events were a “catastrophe
the likes of which Air France has never seen.”
