Gael
Monfils, still searching for his first career Grand Slam singles title, made
his country proud on Monday after he advanced into the quarterfinals of the French
Open with a convincing 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory over Andy Roddick.
Monfils
dominated the match with an overpowering serve that produced 17 aces and just
three double-faults. The Frenchman also collected 45 winners in the match compared
to just 18 from Roddick. The American could not capitalize on his opportunities
as he broke Monfils only once in his ten opportunities.
Monfils
reached the semifinals in last year’s French Open but lost to Roger Federer. He
reached the fourth round of the Australian Open this year and did the same in the
U.S. Open in 2008. His best finish at Wimbledon was reaching the third round,
something he did in 2005 and 2007.
