Pakistani Military Frees Abducted Students and Teachers Near Afghan Border

Dozens of students and teachers abducted by gunman in northwest Pakistan have been freed by the military after troops opened fire on the militants while they were attempting to transport the hostages to South Waziristan.

About 80 students and teachers were rescued after the convoy they were travelling in was stopped by the gunman. A group of approximately 30 minibuses had left Razmak Cadet College in North Waziristan bound for the town of Bannu when they were stopped. Two of the minibuses managed to elude the gunman and when they arrived they informed officials of the abduction.

Early reports suggested that several hundred had been abducted but that number was later lowered by the military who have said all missing had been rescued.

Pakistan has blamed the Taliban for the attack, claiming it to be an act of revenge for the recent attacks by the military in the Swat valley.
