Mauricio Funes, leader of the leftist FMLN party, has been sworn-in as the new president of El Salvador during a ceremony in the capital San Salvador.
Funes, who won the election on March 15, replaces the conservative administration headed by Tony Saca and the impact was felt almost immediately. In one of his first acts as president Funes restored full diplomatic ties with Cuba after a 50 year lull declaring, “Diplomatic, cultural and trade relations will be established immediately with our sister nation of Cuba.”
During his inauguration speech Funes singled out U.S. President Barack Obama and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as “proof that progressive leaders - instead of being a threat - can be a new, safe alternative for their people.”
Among those attending the inauguration of Funes was U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
