French Open 2009 Quarterfinals Results: Maria Sharapova Bounced Out of Roland Garros by Dominika Cibulkova

Maria Sharapova’s chase for an elusive career Grand Slam will have to wait at least another year after the Russian was blasted in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at the French Open quarterfinals by Dominika Cibulkova on Tuesday.

Sharapova couldn’t overcome her 27 unforced errors and presented Cibulkova with too many opportunities as the Slovakian converted six of nine break point chances and committed just nine unforced errors in the match. The French Open is the only Grand Slam singles title that Sharapova has not captured, her best finish being a semifinals appearance in 2007.

Cibulkova is still seeking her first Grand Slam singles title and her semifinal appearance in the 2009 French Open marks the deepest she has ever reached at a Grand Slam event. She reached the fourth round at this year’s Australian Open and the third round of the 2008 U.S. Open. She has never been past the first round at Wimbledon.
