Bernstein Liebhard LLP Continues Investigation of Bard Avaulta Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits

Bard Avaulta surgical mesh, which is used to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), has been linked to serious and life-threatening side effects.  The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are currently investigating injuries caused by Bard Avaulta surgical mesh. Vaginal mesh lawsuits are personal injury cases in which women seek compensation for injuries they have suffered as a result of vaginal mesh complications.

Bard Avaulta Vaginal Mesh FDA Warning
On October 20, 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned healthcare professionals of side effects of using vaginal mesh on their patients and advised them to obtain specialized training for mesh placement procedures after receiving over a thousand reports of complications that were associated with various surgical mesh devices manufactured by a variety of companies.  Among the surgical mesh products associated with vaginal mesh complications are the Avaulta Biosynthetic Support System and Avaulta Plus Biosynthetic Support System, both of which are manufactured by Bard. The reports include side effects of infection, pain, urinary problems and bowel, bladder or blood-vessel perforations.

Bard Avaulta Vaginal Mesh Side Effects
The most frequently-reported side effects associated with vaginal mesh, include:

  • Erosion through vaginal epithelium
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Urinary problems
  • Recurrence of prolapse and/or incontinence

Other side effects, including bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforations may be caused during insertion of the Bard Avaulta mesh.  Treatment of side effects associated with transvaginal placement of Bard Avaulta mesh may involve additional surgical procedures, IV therapy, blood transfusions, and drainage of hematomas or abscesses.

Defects in the Bard Avaulta Vaginal Mesh
The vaginal mesh lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP believe that Bard Avaulta surgical mesh is defective and that the defect contributes to causing many of the side effects associated with the mesh and its placement. Bernstein Liebhard LLP lawyers theorize that the Bard Avaulta surgical mesh design prevents surrounding tissue from receiving proper amounts of nutrients and oxygen, causing impaired healing, which can lead to other complications.
