Atlanta Falcons Beat Philadelphia Eagles in Vick's Return
Michael Vick had not returned to Atlanta as a starting quarterback since he was brought up on charges of dog fighting and sent to prison. That ended his time with the Atlanta Falcons, where he was a popular if shaky quarterback, and led to his signing with the Philadelphia Eagles after his release. Sunday night Vick returned as a more polished, smarter quarterback on a team that stockpiled talent this offseason to try and make a Super Bowl run. Sunday night the Eagles left the field in defeat with Michael Vick on the sidelines with a concussion.
Vick's replacement on the Falcons, Matt Ryan, threw four touchdown passes, a career high, to bring the Falcons back from a 10 point hole and win the game 35-31 in a game that had it all. Tight end Tony Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes, including one acrobatic catch at the back of the endzone where he just got two feet down before falling out of bounds.
Vick played well in his return, throwing for two touchdowns of his own but was forced from the game after hitting his own lineman while being tackled in the pocket. He came off the field and spit up blood before going to the locker room and being diagnosed with a concussion. The Eagles were without backup Vince Young because of a hamstring injury and we forced to finish the game with Mike Kafka. He proved to be solid under center but did not provide the spark that is expected from Vick.
Vick fumbled the ball twice and threw an interception that reminded some fans of the problems he had while playing for Atlanta. On scrambles Vick holds the ball away from his body, which caught up with him when his arm was hit from behind, leading to his second fumble of the night.
The Falcons had to play the game with a chip on their shoulders after being dismantled last week in Chicago by the Bears. Both the Falcons and the Eagles are now 1-1 going into week three.
