Drug Rehab uses Fishing and other Fun Rehab Activities to Help Clients "Have Fun Sober"

Sober Living by the Sea is a treatment center in Newport Beach that has learned over the course of 25 years of successfully treating recovering alcoholics and drug addicts that its recovering clients benefit greatly from fun outdoor rehab activities.

Recently the weekly deep sea fishing expedition has been a popular activity for men and women who are receiving treatment for addiction to drugs and alcohol. One client, identified as "Mike" said "When I go fishing, all of my problems just go away. I am not thinking about drinking or using. I am not thinking about being in treatment. I am just thinking about reeling that fish in."

Staff member Eric V presides over the fishing expedition and had this to say: "I think the outdoor rehab activities help the clients break out of their lonely isolationism. Young people today are often stuck in a isolation mindset and spend their time with TV, games, or computers.  Abusing drugs or alcohol is also an isolating activity and the experience of using breeds loneliness and depression.

We get these kids outdoors and it changes their way of thinking. Once we convince them to get out there and have some fun, they will realize what a great time they are having - then they realize that they are having a great time and doing so without drugs or alcohol."
