More than two dozen people have been confirmed dead and hundreds of others injured following Sunday evening’s earthquake along the border of India and Nepal. The epicenter of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake was located in the Indian state of Sikkim about 39 miles north-west of the capital Gangtok and 169 miles east of Kathmandu, Nepal. About 20 aftershocks were felt throughout the night.
At least 21 people in India have been confirmed dead while Nepal and Tibet reported 7 deaths each. Officials say the death toll will likely climb after rescue teams reach hard hit areas. Rescuers were battling heavy rain, landslides, blocked roads and downed power lines early Monday.
Severe damage has been reported across northern India. Gangtok is possibly the worst hit with more than 100,000 buildings reportedly sustaining severe damage. Damage was also reported in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
