Detroit Tigers Clinch AL Central Division Title with Victory over Athletics

Confirmed by a win over the Athletics Friday, the Tigers are going to the playoffs, and Detroit fans could not be more ecstatic

It looks as if 2011 will be the year of the Detroit Tigers. Cruising all the way to their first division title since 1987, the team became the American League Central Division champions with a 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The Tigers have had and especially dominant showing this month and are expected to do well in the postseason.

September has seen a historic 12-game winning streak for the Tigers, as they swept series with the White Sox, Indians, and Twins to give them their longest winning streak since the 1934 team won 14 straight. With every win, the Tigers are looking more and more like a serious contender for this year’s playoffs.

The Tigers’ roster boasts some of the best players in the league. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander has led the team to 24 wins this season, including one no-hitter, but that’s not the end of the team’s talent. Tigers closer José Valverde has saved 43 straight games, and .331 hitter Miguel Cabrera has picked up 26 home runs this season.

Fans in Detroit are overjoyed at the thought of a serious run at the World Series. Local store owner Steve Thomas, president of the Detroit Athletic Co., is already making room for the new postseason apparel. Tigers followers who have watched the rise of Detroit players from “good” to “elite” status this year are ready to don their own Miguel Cabrera jersey or Justin Verlander jersey in support of the team in the playoffs.
