Opposition Wins Greenland’s Parliamentary Elections

For the first time in 30 years Greenland will be governed by a party other than the Social Democratic Suimut Party as the left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party was declared the winner of the parliamentary elections for the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The IA held 44 percent of the vote after all districts had been counted while Suimut had just over 26 percent.

Kuupik Kleist, leader of the IA, led the celebrations in the capital Nuuk, where he told supporters the party would lead Greenland in a new direction. That direction is one of more independence for citizens following a vote in November that approved plans for the government to assume more responsibility for the island.

While Greenland will manage domestic issues they will still negotiate with Denmark on issues concerning defense and foreign affairs.
