Svetlana
Kuznetsova has advanced to the semifinals of the French Open after beating
Serena Williams in an epic three set battle 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-5 on Wednesday at
Roland Garros.
Kuznetsova
placed 69 percent of her first serves in play and scored points on 63 percent
of those offerings while Serena put 61 percent of her first serves in play but
won 71 percent of those. Serena also collected ten aces and 44 winners compared
to three aces and 33 winners for Kuznetsova yet the Russian won the points when
it mattered most.
Kuznetsova
has one Grand Slam singles title to her credit, a U.S. Open victory in 2004. The
Russian reached the finals of the French Open in 2006 before falling to Justine
Henin and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2005 and 2009 and
the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
