French Open 2009 Quarterfinals Results: Roger Federer Marches into Semifinals with Win Over Gael Monfils

Roger Federer is now just two wins away from completing a career Grand Slam after knocking off Gael Monfils in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the French Open at Roland Garros.

Federer managed to control his serve throughout the match and capitalized on the errors of Monfils to secure the win. The Swiss star placed just 57 percent of his first serves in play but won 80 percent of those offerings and never had his serve broken. In comparison Monfils’ serve was broke by Federer on three of five opportunities.

Federer is sitting on 13 career Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind the record held by Pete Sampras. A win at Roland Garros would also mark a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times. Federer has reached the finals of the French Open the last three years only to fall to Rafael Nadal on each occasion.
