South
African President Jacob Zuma has delivered his first state of the nation
address on Wednesday, declaring he would fight to alleviate poverty in the country
and create more than 500,000 new jobs by the end of the year and an additional
four million by 2014.
Zuma
focused his address on the economy and the affects the downturn has had on the
people, stating more had to be done to protect the “most vulnerable” while also
stressing prudent spending by the government. While pushing for solutions to the
current economic problems Zuma stressed that there would be no quick fix.
The
African National Congress Party leader also pledged to cut violent crime in the
country by 7% to 10% a year as well as provide anti-retroviral HIV drugs for
80% of those in need by 2011.
As
part of his address Zuma announced a national holiday on July 18 each year to honor
Nelson Mandela; he also promised “the best World Cup ever” when the nation
hosts football’s premier event next year.
