Samantha
Stosur is one step closer to capturing her first Grand Slam singles title after
knocking off Sorana Cirestea in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance
to the semifinals of the French Open at Roland Garros.
Stosur,
who upset Elena Dementieva in the third round, had her second straight easy
match as she was coming off a straight set victory over Virginie Razzano in
round four. On Wednesday the Australian hammered out 23 winners compared to
just 12 from Cirestea and broke the Romanian’s serve on five on nine
opportunities.
Stosur,
heading into the 2009 French Open, had never been past the fourth round of a
Grand Slam event. Her best finish had been a fourth round appearance at the Australian
Open in 2006. She has never been past the second round at Wimbledon or the U.S.
Open.
