Tom Glavine Released from Atlanta Braves on Wednesday

Tom Glavine, the surefire Hall of Fame pitcher, was released by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, according to reports.

Glavine, 43, spent the first 16 seasons of his career in Atlanta and was brought back last season after spending five seasons with the New York Mets. However, his season was limited due to injuries.

Glavine, who has 305 career wins, had just 13 starts last season and he has yet to pitch for the Braves this season. He underwent elbow and shoulder surgery, but had complications in April while preparing to rejoin Atlanta.

Glavine was set to earn a $1 million bonus if the Braves added him to the active roster, another $1.25 after 30 days of being with the Braves and then $1.25 million more after 90 days. However, he was cut before being activated.

Glavine won the Cy Young Award in 1991 and 1998, was named the World Series Most Valuable Player in 1995, and is a 10-time National League All-Star. He has won 20 games five times in his career on the way to a 305-203 mark, with 224 of those wins coming with the Braves. He owns a 3.54 career ERA in 682 games, all of which were starts.

Glavine was a member of one of baseball’s best starting rotations, which included Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz. The triumvirate helped to lead Atlanta to five World Series appearances in the 1990s, winning their only title in 1995.
