$10,000 Putting Contest A Part Of Golf Championship

The 2011 U.S. Putting Tour Championship, which features a $10,000 1st-place prize to the winner, is running a $10,000 putting contest to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad in conjunction with the golf tournament being held at The Crossings in Carlsbad, California.

People attempt to qualify for the $10,000 putt throughout the week of the USPT Championship by taking a 15-foot putt. They can pay $10 for one attempt or $20 for three putts. Anyone making the putt returns to the putting green on Sunday, October 2 at 1:00 p.m. for a putt-off.

In the putt-off, all qualified participants take the same putt. Individuals who miss the putt are eliminated until there is one person left. That person then takes one 50-foot putt, which, if made, is worth $10,000. If the putt is missed, the individual receives a night's stay and dinner for two at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa.

"The putting contest is open to everyone who is not a tour or club professional," said U.S. Putting Tour president, Jim Hartley. "All proceeds from this contest go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, so we San Diego County residents come out and support a great cause."

Hartley went on to say that the putting tournament is drawing golfers from around the country, including both amateurs and professionals. Professionals compete for the cash prizes, while amateurs will vie for merchandise prizes provided by the presenting sponsor of the putting championship, Ashdon Golf.

He also indicated that golfers still can enter the golf tournament, while space remains, by going to the USPuttingTour website or by walking up to the event during Championship Week, which begins on Monday, September 26. The first six days are all days when golfers can play their first round, which consists of 72 holes of putting on The Crossings' 8,000 square foot putting green.

Over 150 golfers are expected to compete for the title of America's Best Putter and the USPT Championship crystal trophy.
