American Journalists Facing Charges of “Hostile Acts” in North Korea Appear Before Country’s Highest Court

Two American journalists arrested by North Korea on March 17 and eventually charged with committing “hostile acts” have appeared before the country’s highest court as their controversial trial gets underway despite international calls for their release.

If convicted Euna Lee, a Korean-American, and Laura Ling, a Chinese-American, could be sentenced to ten years in a labor camp. The pair were arrested after they allegedly illegally crossed from China into North Korea while working on a story about refugees who fled the communist North.

Several reports have suggested that the two journalists had actually been on Chinese soil when they were arrested. The United States has called the charges “baseless” and demanded the women be released but Pyongyang has shown no signs of releasing them prior to a trial.
