Dinara
Safina is one step closer to capturing her first career Grand Slam singles
title after she earned a straight set 6-3, 6-3 victory over Dominika Cibulkova
at the French Open on Thursday.
Safina
wasn’t exactly at her best as she committed seven double-faults in the match
yet when she managed to put her serve in play Cibulkova could do little with
it. Safina won points on 65 percent of her first serves put in play and her
serve was broken just once while Cibulkova struggled with her service game,
winning just 50 percent of her first serves and being broken four of eight times.
Safina
reached the finals of the French Open last year but fell to Ana Ivanovic. In 2009
she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to
Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina
reached number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.
