French Open 2009 Semifinals Results: Svetlana Kuznetsova Heads to Finals after Three-Set Battle with Samantha Stosur at Roland Garros

Svetlana Kuznetsova, coming off a marathon three-set victory over Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the French Open, has now advanced to the finals after another three-set victory on Thursday, this time over Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

 

Kuznetsova was able to hammer out six aces in the match and broke Stosur’s serve on five of six opportunities to control the flow of the match. For Stosur the match came down to her unforced errors as the Australian was crippled by 32 unforced errors and five double-faults compared to 22 unforced errors and two double-faults from the Kuznetsova.

 

Kuznetsova has one Grand Slam singles title to her credit, a U.S. Open victory in 2004. The Russian reached the finals of the French Open in 2006 before falling to Justine Henin and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2005 and 2009 and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
