Jameer Nelson was officially activated by the Orlando Magic on Thursday, right in time to face the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Finals.
However, it is uncertain how much time Nelson will or if Nelson will even play in Game 1. Earlier on Thursday, ESPN reported that Nelson would not play in Game 1, but as of 5 p.m., they reported that he was activated by the team.
In order to Nelson to play in the series at all, the team must activate him prior to the first game of the series, so it is still uncertain his status for Game 1. If he does play, he will come off of the bench, according to sources close to the team. Rafer Alston will remain the starting point guard.
Nelson played in just 42 games this season after suffering a torn labrum in his right shoulder in a Feb. 2 game against the Dallas Mavericks. He underwent surgery for his shoulder on Feb. 19, ending his season.
Nelson was then placed on a four-to-six month rehabilitation program, which he has been very successful with, thus accelerating his rehab schedule. In his absence, the Magic acquired point guard Rafer Alston from the Houston Rockets, who took the helm as the starter.
Nelson took part in Tuesday’s practice with the team as they embarked on Game 1, which takes place Thursday night.
During the season, the Magic were 2-0 against the L.A. Lakers. Nelson played in both games and was key in both wins. He averaged 27.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists against the Lakers in both games.
Nelson was named to the 2009 NBA All-Star Game this year, but his injury happened just prior to the game and did not participate. The All-Star nomination was the first in his career. He joined teammates Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis on the team.
