Jay-Z Announces September 11 Release Date for "The Blueprint 3"

By Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Jay-Z will release his long-awaited album “The Blueprint 3” on September 11, according to reports on Thursday.

The date September 11 is notable to recent American history, but is also very meaningful to Jay-Z, as his original “The Blueprint” album was released in 2001, the same day of the epic World Trade Center tragedy.

In addition, Kanye West and 50 Cent both released their albums “Graduation” and “Curtis”, respectively, on Sept. 11 in 2007. Their opening week was the highest-selling week in hip-hop history.

Jay-Z recently severed ties with his record label Def Jam Records, buying himself out of his contract for $5 million.. However, it is uncertain which label will be his new home. He is now a free agent, but has begun negotiations with Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group.

According to reports, Jay-Z was close to signing a distribution deal with Sony Music Group for his Roc Nation label, which will link him with longtime associate and legendary producer Rick Rubin, who heads Sony.

In addition, he is rumored to be speaking with Warner to distribute his Carter Music Group label. WMG is run by Vice President Lyor Cohen and Executive Vice President Kevin Liles, the duo that ran Def Jam at the time of Jay-Z’s signing. The triumvirate has had a very successful relationship in the past and Liles’ departure from Def Jam opened the door for Jay-Z to become president of Def Jam, a position he held for three years.

With all of these negotiations swirling, Jay-Z signed a 10 year, $150 million contract in May 2008 with concert promotion conglomerate Live Nation, which reportedly included a record label deal. Under that contract, he has already inked a deal with producers Stargate to form the label StarRoc. However, his Roc Nation label still has no distribution deal.

West, the only producer that has been linked to Jay-Z’s new album, told MTV News in late May that Jay-Z has scrapped several previously recorded tracks, including the songs that featured the AutoTune sound that West used on his “808s and Heartbreak” LP.

There has been little talk about which songs and artists will be featured on the album. Thus far, “Jockin’ Jay-Z” and “Brooklyn Go Hard,” which were released in 2008, are the only singles thus far on “The Blueprint 3”. According to previous reports, “Swagga Like Us”, which was on T.I.’s “Paper Trail” album, will also be on “The Blueprint 3”.
