Authorities in eastern Mexico are investigating the deaths of at least 35 men and women whose bodies were found falling out of two trucks abandoned in the middle of a roadway on Wednesday. Veracruz state Attorney General Raynaldo Escobar Perez said armed men left the trucks near a busy shopping mall in Boca del Rio with their backdoors open. Some of the bodies had fallen out on the street. Perez called the situation “unprecedented.”
Authorities counted 12 women and 23 men among the dead. The manner of death has not been released. Seven of the victims have been identified as criminals with backgrounds in drug trafficking, homicide, extortion, and kidnapping.
Perez urged the public to remain calm, saying the target of the violence does not appear to be regular civilians. “This is something that can calm the population," he told with Milenio Television. "This is not about civilians. These are people involved in illicit business, in drug sales."
