Alcohol disorders more likely in post World War II individuals

Alcohlism affecting younger generations

Researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health evaluated thirty-one published, peer-reviewed studies and found that individuals born after World War II are more likely to develop alcohol disorders as well as to engage in binge drinking.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and will be published in the December 2011 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. The study recognizes that while genetics play an important part in alcoholism risk, factors in the environment such as laws, social norms and availability of alcohol may play a greater part than once thought. In addition, the study also indicated that alcoholism among females is also on the increase.

“As the study indicates, genetics can play a large part in predisposition to alcohol disorders,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “But, there are other factors which may be equally as important for us to consider, particularly the fact that we are becoming more socially connected via technology than ever before. And those social connections are shaping many variables within our own personal environments and can directly influence our choices to move from social drinking into more problematic drinking. Being aware of these increased risks is key.”
