Drug deaths surpass traffic fatalities in United States

Deaths for drug related accidents on the increase

Recently released data from The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that drugs resulted in nearly 38,000 deaths nationwide, surpassing traffic accidents as cause of deaths in 2009.

“While many people blame prescription narcotics for the current drug problem, that notion is a misnomer,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “The true problem is public education on the risk of addiction from these substances. In many cases, prescription narcotics are a necessity in a person’s life and, for the majority of those individuals, they don’t pose a problem. However, the problem lies with those who irresponsibly use the drugs or pass them on to others to use. We need to regain our focus and educate the public, particularly young people, on the dangers of irresponsible use as well as the taking of other people’s medications.”

The majority of preventable deaths are declining, with the exception of those related to drugs. In the past ten years, drug-related deaths have doubled to a point that a life is lost because of the misuse of drugs every 14 minutes. On the other hand, traffic fatalities have been declining for decades, due mostly to developments for increased auto safety.
