French Open 2009 Semifinals Results: Robin Soderling Continues Amazing Run, Advances to Finals after Knocking Off Fernando Gonzalez

Robin Soderling has continued his amazing run through the 2009 French Open and has now advanced to his first career Grand Slam final after knocking off Fernando Gonzalez in a five-set battle 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 at Roland Garros on Friday.

Soderling and Gonzalez each had to deal with the other’s overpowering serve as the Swede collected 16 aces in the match while the Chilean hammered out 22 in the match. Soderling managed to overcome 45 unforced errors by hitting 74 winners and breaking Gonzalez’s serve five times.

Soderling had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam prior to the 2009 French Open. He had reached the third round of Wimbledon twice, most recently in 2007, and the third round of the U.S. Open in 2005 while reaching the second round of the Australian Open earlier this year. Soderling did reach the third round of the French Open last year.
