David Watson Gets 4 Years for Death of Wife Tina Watson on Honeymoon

David Gabriel Watson was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison Friday for the 2003 death of his wife of 11-days, Christina Mae Watson.

Watson pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the droving death of his new wife. The couple was scuba diving off the coast of Townsville, Australia on their honeymoon when Tina Watson drowned.

Watson, an experienced diver who was trained to rescue panicked divers, told police his 26-year-old wife appeared to panic 45 feet underwater. Instead of trying to help her or give her emergency oxygen, Watson told police he swam to the surface for help. He claims Tina accidentally drown but coroner David Glasgow theorizes Watson held his wife underwater and turned off her oxygen supply.

A possible motive for the murder was Tina’s modest life insurance policy. Shortly before their wedding, Watson had asked Tina to maximize her policy and make him the beneficiary.
