Maryland has a new report out giving the information that prescription drug abuse is on the rise. According from these last reports; going a few years back there has been 106 percent increase in treatment admissions having to do with abuse of prescription drugs. Fifty Five percent of intoxication deaths in Maryland also included prescription opiates. The state is proposing a program that would target people who got prescriptions improperly. It is a Drug Prescription Monitoring Program and it identifies from many sources, people receiving prescriptions for medication that is not appropriate. There would be a data base that would track the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances. It would give information to doctors, pharmacies, patients and law enforcements on the dangers of prescription drug misuse. From this data base you could identify who has substance abuse and addiction problems. This information could then be used to stage medical health interventions and make sure a person got access to treatment. Officials feel that prescription drug abuse is a major health problem and that getting this information to patients and doctors is one proven strategy to get people into treatment and stop overdosing and addiction. Maryland is one of seven states that do have prescription Drug Monitoring Programs.
