For 28 years, SuperCamp’s
academic summer camps have set the standard in teaching youth development and learning skills to students worldwide. Through six unique academic courses, students learn ‘how to learn’ through tips and skills that will guide them through high school and into college.
One of the most popular courses students experience at the academic summer camp is Quantum Writing. It is here that students adopt the six-step writing process that will help them be stronger, more creative and powerful writers.
The first step students learn about the Quantum Writing process is how to ‘See It’. The power of observation and really looking at something in detail gives us lots of ideas. Great writers are great observers.
Next, students learn how to ‘Say It’; or tell a story about what they want to write. Third, students ‘Draw It’. They are taught that if you don’t know what to write about – draw! Drawing pictures and doodles can create inspiration.
This is followed by ‘Fastwrite It’. Students write without a destination in mind. They are taught to let their thoughts flow freely without concern for grammar or content.
Next is ‘Cluster It’. Clustering is a way to get many ideas on paper. Students start with their topic in the middle of the page and branch out ideas all around it. Finally, students ‘Mind-Map It,’ using pictures and colors to create even more details than before.
Through their writing, students discover how to create pictures in the mind of the reader, and learn how to show the reader, with words, what they mean. Just telling the reader what they are to know leads to boring writing.
By adding ‘SPAM’ to their writing, students add flavor to their work through the use of similes, personification, alliteration, and metaphor. This allows the writer to tap into their creative power and flood their writing with lots of description to keep the reader interested.
Students are also taught the differences between a Compare/Contrast Essay, Analytical Essay, Research Paper, Narrative Essay, and a Persuasive Essay and how to write each one creatively and for their audience.
Once students have completed SuperCamp’s Quantum Writing academic, they have successfully learned how to be more creative, efficient writers. They take pleasure in their writing because they know they are succeeding. This builds their confidence and self-esteem, as well as their grades.
SuperCamp is hosted on seven college campuses across the country, including Stanford, Cornell, and Wake Forest Universities. For more information on SuperCamp's
