Stephanie Lazarus, LAPD Detective, Arrested for 1983 Murder

A veteran police detective was arrested Friday in the 1986 slaying of her ex-boyfriend’s wife. Stephanie Lazarus, 49, was arrested at downtown police headquarters in Los Angeles after a sample of her saliva matched the killer’s DNA.

Lazarus is accused of killed Sherri Rae Rasmussen, who was married to Lazarus’ ex-boyfriend Jon Ruetten. Police initially determined Rasmussen was the victim of a robbery. She was found beaten and shot to death on February 24, 1986 in her home. No suspects were found and the case went cold. Last week, undercover officers obtained a sample of her saliva to compare to DNA at the crime scene.

Lazarus was being held without bail at the Los Angeles County jail. “It's very bittersweet. Our goal is to always bring people to justice, but this is somebody we know,” said Deputy Chief Charlie Beck, who oversees the detective bureau.
