Svetlana Kuznetsova captured her second career Grand Slam singles title on Saturday after knocking off Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at the French Open finals. For Safina it was another disappointment as she remains without a Grand Slam singles title despite reaching three finals, twice at Roland Garros.
Kuznetsova was able to capitalize on Safina’s difficulty serving as Dinara committed seven double-faults, won just 53 percent of her first serves put in play and had her serve broken on five of seven opportunities. As for Kuznetsova she had much more control over her serve as she won 67 percent of her first serves put in play.
Kuznetsova had one Grand Slam singles title to her credit, a U.S. Open victory in 2004. The Russian reached the finals of the French Open in 2006 before falling to Justine Henin and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2005 and 2009 and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
