Death Toll Mounts in Peruvian Showdown Between Police and Indigenous Protesters

The death toll continues to mount following the showdown between Peruvian police officers and indigenous protesters angered by the government’s plans to push oil and gas exploration on their ancestral lands.

On Friday police officers and protesters clashed in an area called Cruz del Diablo in the Utcubamba province in the Amazon. At least 22 tribesmen and 11 officers were killed in the fighting and several officers were held captive.

Officials attempted to launch a rescue and during the operation a further nine police officers were killed while 22 were freed.
