Philippine Troops Seize Separatist Camp on Mindanao, Rebels Killed

Philippine troops have captured a separatist camp on the island of Mindanao following a bombing campaign that killed at least 30 rebels.

Following the offensive the military entered the camp and found a large cache of weapons and ammunition belonging to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a group fighting to gain an expanded autonomous region on the island for Muslims.

According to the military the bodies of several rebels were found inside concrete bunkers yet a rebel spokesman has denied the reports and said the military had actually attacked a Muslim village, not a rebel base.

Fighting between Philippine troops and rebels has intensified since peace talks collapsed in August 2008. The government and MILF appeared to have a deal in place but parliament blocked the agreement after expressing concerns surrounding the Christian majority. Following the collapse of the deal rebels launched attacks on several Christian villages and Philippine troops have since stepped up their offensive against the guerillas.
