Alcoholism is a disease that destroys not only the addict, but the family. Every member of the family is affected by the alcoholic’s actions and decisions, and while everyone applauds when the alcoholic acknowledges the disease and seeks treatment, it will take time for the wounds inflicted upon the family to heal. Many wounds from alcoholism will never heal completely.
Alcohol detox and alcohol treatment are the only ways an alcoholic should positively address their disease. Treatment will give the addict every necessary tool to not just learn to live without alcohol, but through intensive individual and group therapy, teach the alcoholic how to mend broken fences and rebuild shattered hopes and dreams with their spouse, children, parents and siblings.
It will take a significant amount of time to "make things right" and some feelings will never be reconciled between the addict and their loved ones. The disease may have contributed to a lost job, failed career, destroyed finances, or even the loss of a home, and there will undoubtedly be a great deal of anger and resentment on the part of the other family members. Children of an alcoholic home, especially young children, often find concentrating in school difficult and may exhibit behavioral problems that will need to be addressed. It is not uncommon for every member of the family to benefit from individual and group therapy.
Alcohol treatment programs will teach the addict how to attempt to restore trust and hope between themselves and their loved ones. It is critical for every member of the family to understand that recovery just doesn’t happen when the doors of the alcohol treatment center close behind their loved one. Recovery and sobriety are an everyday struggle, and it is only with the love and support of family and friends that the alcoholic will find lasting success and renewed confidence.
