According to box office estimates the Colin Farrell/Jamie Foxx 80’s flashback, Miami Vice was able to knock Johnny Depp and the rest of his pirate mates from the top spot.
Bringing in $25.2 million in its opening weekend, Miami Vice held the box office bragging rights while Pirates slipped to number two with $20.5 million.
Michael Mann, director of Miami Vice, was able to capture 62% of their sales from the over 30 crowd according to Universal. Despite mixed reviews from critics the cop drama fed off the retrotainment.
Although Pirates fell a spot, there was some good news for Johnny Depp and his crew. With total sales reaching $663.9 million, Dead Man’s Chest surpassed the original Pirates of the Caribbean in just its fourth week. Even more impressive is the movies new claim to fame. Pirates is now the highest grossing film in Disney history, surpassing Finding Nemo.
John Tucker Must Die was the third highest grossing film of the weekend pulling in $14.1 million while Monster House won the animation war claiming the fourth spot over The Ant Bully $11.5 million v. $8.1 million respectively.
