Adventurous Opportunist aka Workamper.
Workamping: Working or volunteering at a variety of jobs across the United States and Canada while living part or full time in a recreational vehicle; the ability to “enjoy America, one job at a time;” also, small business owners or independent contractors who conduct their business out of a recreational vehicle.
Most people aren’t familiar with the word “workamping” although it was coined in 1987 by Workamper News, Inc., which began as a newsletter out of Heber Springs, Arkansas. The business has greatly expanded yet still operates out of Heber Springs.
When people first hear about Workamping opportunities, they often want to know “how do I find out more; or, ask “how do I get started?”
A great way for the adventurous opportunist or Workamper wannabe is to attend a Workamper Rendezvous. The next Rendezvous will be held in Heber Springs, Arkansas on October 18-20, 2011. Heber Springs is a small town that people flock to for its’ natural resources—especially, Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River. It also has a state-of-the art Community Center which will enable 225 attendees to learn what the workamping lifestyle is all about and how to get started or improve their success.
The main focus is to allow experienced Workampers to mingle with those that are just exploring the RV lifestyle. Attendees learn from each other and the eleven experts that present seminars on Workamping opportunities, RV maintenance, choosing a domicile, handling finances, mail, taxes as well as how to legally deduct a lot of expenses while working on the road. Small business opportunities are discussed along with the proper legal treatment so that less money is sent to the IRS. The RV kitchen and cooking tips are a topic of interest; slide show presentations of great places to work and volunteer are inspiring. Several Employers will be on hand to discuss their opportunities, including Amazon, Inc. who hires thousands of workampers each year, especially October through December. A representative from The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Volunteer Clearinghouse will tell people about the country-wide opportunities to live in beautiful places while earning an income for a season or more, or volunteering for a short period of time.
On October 21, 2011, several of the RV living experts will be presenting even more at a Bonus Day. Options are: Terry Cooper, RV Maintenance—get to know your rig and maintain it to prevent problems and save money; Jaimie Hall Bruzenak: RV lifestyle expert: how to write a resume, interview, get the right employment situation; George Montgomery, the Tax Master: choose a domicile, tax deductions, bookkeeping on the road; special guest Mark Kohler, Attorney at Law and CPA, author, entrepreneur and well-known speaker: Small Business, Tax & Legal Symposium.
Most workampers are retired or semi-retired, but more and more young couples, singles or families are pursuing their dream of traveling the country with the seasons, supporting their lifestyle through Workamper opportunities that Workamper News, Inc. advertises in their membership magazine or online daily Hotlines.
Workamper News, Inc., is a membership based organization which allows “dreamers” (those who dream about living the lifestyle “some day”) to learn how to make it happen whether one or ten years away from the possibility of living the RV lifestyle. Those ready to pursue or already living the lifestyle join at several membership levels according to their desire to avail themselves of the resources and benefits offered.
