Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has announced her plans to run in the 2010 presidential elections, insisting she would win.
Tymoshenko’s announcement means she will face stand against current president and one-time ally Viktor Yushchenko. While the two had worked closely to usher in the Orange Revolution in 2004 they quickly stood on opposite ends in the new alliance and have openly criticized each other.
On Friday Yushchenko took a blow when Defense Minister Yuri Yekhanurov was forced out of his ministerial position by parliament following charges of corruption. In making her announcement to stand in the 2010 elections Tymoshenko said she would head a government that would be “strong and not venal,” a shot at Yushchenko who now has to deal with a Ukraine that has no foreign, defense or finance minister.
