Wanda Sykes Reveals She Had Breast Cancer, Underwent Mastectomy

Normally Wanda Sykes goes in to interviews full of jokes, but during her recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres the actress-comedian got serious when she revealed some very personal news – she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy.

Sykes reveals doctors found DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in her left breast after she underwent a breast reduction.

"I had breast cancer," Sykes reveals. "This was in February. I went for the reduction. I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff. My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction."

"It wasn't until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] in my left breast,” she explains. “I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer. So I was very lucky."

Sykes tells DeGeneres that she could have opted for monitoring the DCIS ever three months, but since her mother’s family has a history of breast cancer, she decided to have a bilateral mastectomy

"I had both breasts removed … because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer,” she says. "It sounds scary up front, but what do you want? Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it’s too late?"

Sykes appears next in Disney’s The Muppets. The film, which stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones, is set to hit theaters on November 23.
