Japanese officials say the death toll from Typhoon Roke rose to 11 on Thursday. At least 5 people remain missing and are feared dead.
Roke made landfall Wednesday on the main island of Honshu. Authorities prepared residents for the storm by releasing evacuation advisories to more than 1 million people earlier in the week. Workers reinforced riverbanks with sandbags ahead of the storm.
Heavy rain caused flooding and mudslides across the mainland. Travel was disrupted with more than 300 flights canceled and railways temporarily shut down. Two landslide dams were ruptured and a third is expected to burst, according to the Kinki Regional Development Bureau.
