Days after gunmen left two trucks full of bodies in the middle of a road in the state of Veracruz, Mexican authorities discovered 11 more bodies in the same area. The state-run Notimex news agency reports the bodies were found in four different locations around Boca del Rio on Thursday. It is unclear if the killings are related to the 35 bodies discovered in the abandoned trucks on Tuesday.
The trucks were left near a busy shopping mall in Boca del Rio with their backdoors open. Some of the bodies had fallen out on the street. Authorities counted 12 women and 23 men among the dead. Many of the victims were identified as criminals with backgrounds in kidnapping, drug trafficking and murder. A local police officer and two minors were also among the dead.
In a meeting with state prosecutors and Boca del Rio judges, Attorney General Marisela Morales said the killings were the result of a drug dispute. The incident is still under investigation and authorities have no suspects.
"The state cannot, must not and never will allow these types of cowardly actions to go unpunished," Morales said.
