Euna
Lee and Laura Ling, the two American journalists who had been arrested by North
Korean officials on March 17 and charged with “hostile acts” and illegal entry
into the country, have been sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp.
According
to North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA the sentence handed down by the country’s
highest court “confirmed the grave crime they committed against the Korean nation
and their illegal border crossing.”
That
court case blocked outside observers from witnessing the trial, leading many in
the international community and rights organizations to protest the sentencing.
The U.S. State Department reacted to the verdict in a statement saying, “We are
deeply concerned by the reported sentencing of the two American citizen
journalists by North Korean authorities, and we are engaged through all
possible channels to secure their release.”
While
Euna Lee and Laura Ling were arrested for illegal entry into North Korea there have
been reports that have suggested they were actually detained on Chinese soil,
allegations denied by the North.
