France’s capital city of Paris has made exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen following a ceremony conducted by Mayor Bertrand Delanoe.
While French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called the act a municipal matter and not an official act of the state Chinese authorities have reacted strongly to the move. China’s foreign ministry department lashed out at the decision made by Paris and said it had “created grave interference in relations between China and France.”
France has been trying to reestablish ties with China for some time yet the move on Monday appears to have further fractured that relationship after Chinese officials had warned France not to make any more “errors” on Tibet.
China has been angry with France since last year’s chaotic scenes tied to last year’s Olympic torch relay last year as well as Sarkozy’s meeting with the Dalai Lama in December.
China has accused the Dalai Lama of attempting to split China while the spiritual leader has insisted he is only trying to gain autonomy for the Tibetan people.
