Suspected
militants entered a mosque in southern Thailand’s Cho-ai-rong district of the
Narathiwat province on Monday evening and opened fire, killing at least ten
worshipers including the local imam.
According
to reports five gunmen entered the mosque during evening prayers and
indiscriminately shot at an estimated 50 people inside. There have been no claims
of responsibility in the attack but many suspect Muslim insurgents who have carried
out similar attacks in the region.
Narathiwat,
which borders neighboring Malaysia, has continued to experience heavy violence as
insurgents fight to establish control in the province.
