National Putting Championship Passes 200 Entrants

The inaugural U.S. Putting Tour National Championship, which begins on Monday, September 26, has surpassed 200 entries and, according to USPT founder and president, Jim Hartley, has room for more amateur and professional golfers in the tournament.

"The format of our putting tournament includes holding six days of round-one play," said Hartley. "This means that golfers can enter and begin play as late as Saturday, October 1, if round-one spots remain available that late into the week."

Hartley indicated that golfers interested in competing for the $10,000 first-place prize and amateurs have a better chance of finding open spots earlier in the week. He said that people can still register online at the putting tour website or they can come to The Crossings at Carlsbad, the site of the weeklong golf event, during tournament week to enter in person.

After the first round is completed on October 1, the field will be cut to 72 golfers who will play Round 2 on the morning of Sunday, October 2. These remaining competitors will play a 27-hole putting round before the field is cut once again to the low 24 from the morning. The third and final round will take place in the afternoon to determine the professional, amateur and overall winners.

The first round consists of 72 holes of putting on The Crossings' 8,000 square foot practice putting green, which features a view of the Pacific Ocean. Twelve holes will be cut on the green, requiring golfers to make six trips around the course to complete their 72-hole first round.

Hartley said that the putting course will be comprised of several makeable putts and a few holes that bring a possible three-putt into play. Golfers will play in twosomes and a shotgun start will be utilized for play in Rounds 1 and 2.

The professional winner of the putting championship also earns a spot into a 2012 World Putting Tour Championships event that will offer a first-place prize of $100,000. More information on the U.S. Putting Tour is available at the USPT website and by emailing info@usputtingtour.com.
