Guinea-Bissau Keeps Presidential Election Plans in Place Despite Killings

Guinea-Bissau has announced the presidential elections scheduled to take place on June 28 will move forward despite the killing of a candidate and ex-defense minister.

The country has been under the leadership of interim leader Raimundo Pereira since President Joao Bernardo Vieira was assassinated in March and it was Pereira’s decision to move forward with the elections after consulting with the government and political parties.

That decision comes on the heels of the murder of presidential candidate Baciro Dabo last week as well as the shooting death of former Defense Minister Helder Proenca by soldiers belonging to the military. Authorities had said the two men had been plotting a coup yet their supporters have denied those charges.

Dabo had been an ally of the late President Vieira who had been murdered by soldiers after they blamed him for a bomb attack that killed the army chief of staff.

The decision to move forward with the June 28 presidential election has been contested by Paulo Mendoca, an independent candidate, who has argued that the constitution stipulates a delay if one of the candidates dies.
